amplified
Amplified

Released on November 30, 1999, Amplified is Q-Tip’s first solo studio album, arriving after the 1998 dissolution of A Tribe Called Quest. It preserves much of his relaxed, conversational flow and sample-based sensibility, but places it in a sleeker, more immediate late-1990s setting. The 13-track album was shaped chiefly by Q-Tip and Jay Dee—later widely known as J Dilla—with DJ Scratch producing two tracks; their work combines crisp programmed drums, deep bass, clipped funk samples, and spacious arrangements that give Q-Tip’s voice room to glide.

The album’s best-known singles, “Vivrant Thing” and “Breathe and Stop,” are playful, danceable records with strong pop appeal, while “Wait Up,” “Higher,” “Let’s Ride,” “Things U Do,” and “Go Hard” retain a more understated, head-nodding hip-hop character. Guest turns from Meda Leacock, Busta Rhymes, Jessica Rivera, and Korn broaden the palette, especially on the unexpected rap-rock crossover “End of Time.” Though its more overtly commercial direction distinguished it from Tribe’s warmer, jazz-inflected albums, Amplified still feels connected to that lineage through Q-Tip’s unhurried presence and Dilla’s inventive rhythms. It became Q-Tip’s most commercially successful solo release, reached gold certification in the United States, and established “Vivrant Thing” as one of his signature solo tracks.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0784/2041/0682/files/Screenshot_2026-08-25_at_1.48.48_PM.jpeg?v=1787680226
