cold_world
Cold World

Cold World is the seventh studio album by Richmond Hill, Ontario punk rock band The Flatliners — comprising vocalist/guitarist Chris Cresswell (also a member of Hot Water Music), guitarist Scott Brigham, bassist Jon Darbey, and drummer Paul Ramirez — released on May 8, 2026 via Rude Records, Equal Vision Records, and Dine Alone Records. The album arrives four years after 2022's New Ruin, which was a more inward-looking record preoccupied with generational trauma, and represents a deliberate emotional pivot. Where New Ruin processed pain, Cold World steps back from the turmoil of the present moment with what Punktastic memorably describes as "nowstalgia" — "the joy of living each moment with the joy that we reserve for some imagined glorious past." It is, as Noizze UK puts it, "an expected continuation of the band's throaty, aged-denim-jacket-scented sound" — a description meant entirely as a compliment — placing the band in the lineage of Against Me!, The Menzingers, and The Gaslight Anthem, two decades on from their 2005 debut Destroy to Create and without a single lineup change.

Across twelve tracks, Cold World balances raw punk energy with melodic hooks and a mood of hard-won equanimity. Opener "Stolen Valour" kicks in with a glass-sharp riff and gang vocals before exploding into an instantly memorable chorus. Lead single "Good, You?" takes aim at toxic masculinity and enforced male stoicism — "the ever-open wound" of never being able to reveal vulnerability — with a rousing, uplifting roar that manages to be simultaneously aggressive and oddly comforting. "Inner Peace" is an ironic title for a claustrophobic, high-velocity track, while "Pulpit" chants challenges to the status quo over harsh harmonies and rough riffs. "And They're Off" is the album's most poignant sing-along, a meditation on keeping going when the horse you're betting on is already dead, while "Burn" is described by Dying Scene as "the best pound for pound song on the entire album" and a reminder of how far the band has come. Closer "United In Spite" is a tribute to loyalty and in-group solidarity built for live audiences.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0784/2041/0682/files/Screenshot_2026-06-10_at_1.15.49_PM.jpeg?v=1781111957
