knackology_the_zen_recordings
Knackology: The Zen Recordings

Knackology: The Zen Recordings is a 19-track archival compilation by Los Angeles power pop band The Knack, released on May 8, 2026 through Omnivore Recordings. The collection draws from Zen Records, a boutique label founded by the band's late principal songwriter and lead vocalist Doug Fieger — who passed away in 2010 — as an outlet for new Knack material, early recordings, demos, and rarities that might otherwise never reach the public. Omnivore Recordings has maintained a decade-plus relationship with Zen Records, having previously curated and reissued a number of Knack archival projects, and Knackology represents the latest and most comprehensive fruit of that collaboration. The 71-minute collection spans the full arc of the band's career, from pre-Get The Knack demos recorded by Fieger and guitarist Berton Averre — who began collaborating as far back as 1973, six years before their landmark 1979 Capitol debut — to live recordings stretching from 1978 through 1994, to studio tracks drawn from their later albums Zoom (1998) and Normal As The Next Guy (2001).

The tracklist is a deliberate corrective to the "one hit wonder" label the band was unfairly saddled with following the enormous commercial success of "My Sharona." Alongside that iconic closer — captured live at Mountain View, California on June 10, 1994 — the compilation includes live versions of "Good Girls Don't," "Baby Talks Dirty," and "One Day At A Time," early demos like "That's What The Little Girls Do" and "Rock & Roll Is Good For You," and rarities including the band's cover of Badfinger's "No Matter What," originally recorded for a Badfinger tribute album. As Rough Trade noted, Fieger himself considered Zoom the band's finest album, and the studio tracks drawn from that period and from Normal As The Next Guy make a persuasive case that The Knack remained a vital creative force long after their commercial peak. The collection is mastered by multiple Grammy-winning engineer Michael Graves and accompanied by liner notes from Grammy-winner Lee Lodyga, who has overseen Knack reissues for Capitol, Virgin, and Omnivore alike.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0784/2041/0682/files/Screenshot_2026-06-17_at_6.18.25_PM.jpeg?v=1781734802
