Issued alongside Monk Meditations, it returns to Thelonious Monk’s music as a formative influence on Batiste’s playing, expanding compact compositions into performances shaped by classical structure and improvisational freedom. Its guiding idea is reinvention: rather than simply reproducing Monk’s recordings, Batiste treats the melodies as foundations for larger musical forms, bringing their distinctive harmonic and rhythmic character into conversation with his own piano language.

The sequence opens with “In Walked Bud,” “Blue Monk,” and “Ugly Beauty,” establishing familiar Monk compositions before introducing “Susu’s Back in Town,” a Batiste original that blends classical and bebop influences with a buoyant, spontaneous feel. “Red Beans,” “Brilliant Corners,” and “Light Green Reverie” lead into the closing “Monk Movement,” completing a program that places original expression beside its source of inspiration. Where the companion Monk Meditations emphasizes quiet contemplation, Monk Movements gives greater prominence to rhythmic vitality and improvisation. Together, the two records explore complementary sides of Monk’s influence, with this fourth volume emphasizing how his musical ideas can generate new movement rather than remain fixed in the past.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0784/2041/0682/files/Screenshot_2026-10-23_at_2.46.12_PM.jpg?v=1792828809
