Description

8:18 is the fifth studio album by the Dayton, Ohio metalcore band The Devil Wears Prada, released on September 17, 2013 through Roadrunner Records. The title is a direct allusion to Romans 8:18 — "I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us" — and that scripture anchors both the lyrical tone and the album's emotional arc. Produced by Adam Dutkiewicz of Killswitch Engage and Matt Goldman, the record was described by vocalist Mike Hranica as "sad and miserable" in its atmosphere, and it largely delivers on that promise: 13 tracks of dense, brooding metalcore that filters themes of suffering, grief, and faith through a sound considerably darker than the band's earlier work. Commercially, the album debuted at number 20 on the Billboard 200, number 6 on the Top Rock Albums chart, and reached number one on the Top Christian Albums chart in its first week.

Musically, 8:18 represents a notable evolution in the band's sound, incorporating industrial metal textures — particularly on the track "Care More" — alongside the chugging riffwork, breakdowns, and melodic clean/harsh vocal interplay that defined their earlier records. Guitarist Chris Rubey's work ranges from aggressive chug-driven passages ("Rumors," "War") to more subdued melodic territory, while the dual vocal dynamic between Hranica's screams and Jeremy DePoyster's cleaner, increasingly raw singing gives the album an emotional depth that reviewers noted as among the band's most affecting. The album is also notable for lineup transitions: it marks the debut of new keyboardist Jon Gering replacing founding member James Baney, and stands as the final album featuring founding members Rubey and drummer Daniel Williams. Highlights include opener "Gloom," the lead single "Martyrs," the anthem-ready "War," and the brooding closer "In Heart."
