Description

A Holly Dolly Christmas is Dolly Parton’s 2020 holiday album, released October 2 through her Butterfly Records label. It was her first Christmas album in 30 years, and it blends standards with original seasonal songs in a warm, polished country-pop setting. Parton opens with “Holly Jolly Christmas” and moves through songs such as “Christmas on the Square,” “Circle of Love,” “Comin’ Home for Christmas,” “I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus,” and “Mary, Did You Know?,” balancing playful celebration with nostalgia, faith, family, and homecoming. Produced by Kent Wells, the original album combines acoustic country colour, orchestral touches, bells, and smooth traditional-pop arrangements.

The album is especially defined by its guests, who make it feel like a communal holiday gathering: Miley Cyrus joins Parton on “Christmas Is,” Michael Bublé duets on the romantic “Cuddle Up, Cozy Down Christmas,” Jimmy Fallon appears on “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” Billy Ray Cyrus sings on “Christmas Where We Are,” and Willie Nelson shares “Pretty Paper.” Parton also performs “You Are My Christmas” with her brother Randy, giving the record a particularly personal family dimension. Later deluxe editions expanded the collection with songs including “Three Candles,” “The Wish Book,” “Baby It’s Cold Outside” with Rod Stewart, “A Smoky Mountain Christmas,” “Wrapped Up in You,” and “Silent Night.”

Artist | Dolly Parton

Dolly Parton is an American singer-songwriter, musician, actress, businesswoman, and philanthropist whose work has made her one of country music’s defining figures. Raised in rural Tennessee, she brought an Appalachian-rooted sensibility to songs that are vivid, plainspoken, emotionally precise, and often built around memorable melodic hooks. Her best-known compositions—including “Coat of Many Colors,” “Jolene,” “I Will Always Love You,” and “9 to 5”—show her range from intimate autobiographical storytelling to sharp character sketches and pop-country anthems. Her distinctive high voice, banjo and guitar playing, self-created glamorous image, and generous humour have helped her build an audience far beyond country music.

Parton’s recorded catalogue spans roughly 50 studio albums, beginning with Hello, I’m Dolly (1967). Landmark records include Coat of Many Colors (1971), My Tennessee Mountain Home (1973), Jolene (1974), Here You Come Again (1977), and 9 to 5 and Odd Jobs (1980); she also made influential collaborative albums with Porter Wagoner and, later, with Emmylou Harris and Linda Ronstadt on Trio (1987) and Trio II (1999). Her later work has continued to move among roots music, gospel, children’s music, soundtracks, and mainstream pop, including The Grass Is Blue (1999), Little Sparrow (2001), Blue Smoke (2014), Pure & Simple (2016), A Holly Dolly Christmas (2020), Run, Rose, Run (2022), and the 30-track rock project Rockstar (2023).

Beyond recordings, Parton has used her success to support literacy, education, and community work, most visibly through the Imagination Library, which provides free books to children. Her legacy rests not only on longevity or hit records, but on the unusual consistency of her songwriting: whether writing about poverty, faith, romance, ambition, or heartbreak, she combines regional specificity with feelings that travel easily across genres and generations.
