Albatross (Anniversary Edition) celebrates Big Wreck’s 2012 album, the record that marked the Canadian-American rock band’s return to full-length work after its original breakup. Led by vocalist, guitarist, and principal songwriter Ian Thornley, the original eleven-song program pairs muscular alternative and hard-rock riffs with unusually melodic, detail-rich songwriting. “Head Together,” “A Million Days,” “Wolves,” the title track, “Glass Room,” “All Is Fair,” and the expansive “Control” move between radio-ready hooks, layered guitar textures, and shifting arrangements, demonstrating a band that can make technically sophisticated playing feel direct and emotionally accessible.
This anniversary edition expands the original album to 16 tracks and was issued in conjunction with its first vinyl pressing. Alongside the original material, it includes newly created alternate versions of “Wolves,” “Albatross,” and “A Million Days,” developed by producer/engineer Eric Ratz with Thornley; the previously unreleased bonus track “Fade Away”; and a live performance of “Albatross” recorded at Suhr Guitar Factory. These additions make the edition more than a straightforward reissue: it provides alternate perspectives on some of the album’s defining songs while retaining the balance of weight, melodic lift, and virtuosic guitar work that made Albatross a standout in Big Wreck’s catalogue.
