Description

All Eyez On Me is 2Pac’s fourth studio album and the last released during his lifetime, issued as a 27‑track double LP on February 13, 1996 via Death Row and Interscope. Recorded in a burst of activity between October and December 1995, just after his release from prison and as he formally aligned with Death Row, it was the first full‑length double solo rap album made for mass commercial release, and it immediately debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, selling 566,000 copies in its first week. Within five months it was certified 5x platinum, and in 2014 it reached Diamond status, securing its place alongside The Chronic and Doggystyle as a defining West Coast hip‑hop masterpiece.

Musically, All Eyez On Me is a panoramic survey of mid‑’90s West Coast gangsta rap and G‑funk: bouncy basslines, smooth synth leads, and hard‑knocking drums underpin an array of star‑studded collaborations while keeping 2Pac as the unmistakable center. Disc One opens with an almost uninterrupted run of bangers—“Ambitionz Az A Ridah,” “All Bout U,” “Skandalouz,” “Got My Mind Made Up,” “How Do U Want It,” “2 of Amerikaz Most Wanted,” and “California Love”—that capture celebration, bravado, and defiant joy. Disc Two leans slightly darker and more reflective, with tracks like “Holla At Me,” “Life Goes On,” “Only God Can Judge Me,” “What’z Ya Phone #,” “No More Pain,” and “Heaven Ain’t Hard 2 Find” mixing paranoia, spiritual searching, love, and exhaustion over Johnny “J,” Daz Dillinger, DJ Quik, and Dr. Dre‑helmed production. The album’s singles—“California Love,” “How Do U Want It,” “I Ain’t Mad at Cha,” and “2 of Amerikaz Most Wanted”—became some of the era’s biggest rap hits, with “California Love” now a canonical West Coast anthem.
