Almost Here
The Academy Is...
Almost Here is the debut studio album by Chicago pop-punk band The Academy Is..., released on February 8, 2005 through Fueled by Ramen. Recorded at Wisner Productions in St. Cloud, Florida and produced, engineered, and mixed by James Paul Wisner, the album marked a striking departure from the band's earlier post-hardcore EP material — trading in the genre's characteristic hard edges and time-signature shifts for a more overtly melodic, pop-oriented sound built around the expressive vocal performances of frontman William Beckett. All ten tracks, written primarily by Beckett and guitarist Mike Carden, are lean and hook-driven, running a brisk 33 minutes across songs like the punchy opener "Attention," the radio-ready "Season," the Latin-inflected "Black Mamba," and the anthemic "Skeptics and True Believers." Notably, the lineup on the recording differed slightly from the touring lineup: guitarists Tom Conrad and drummer Andy Mrotek both joined the band after the sessions concluded, though both are credited in the liner notes.
The album spawned three singles — "Checkmarks," "Slow Down," and "The Phrase That Pays" — and was promoted through an extensive run of tours alongside Fueled by Ramen labelmates Fall Out Boy, Gym Class Heroes, and others, helping establish The Academy Is... as a prominent name in the mid-2000s alternative and pop-punk scene. It debuted at number 20 on Billboard's Top Heatseekers chart and went on to sell over 265,000 copies in the US by 2009. Critical reception was enthusiastic within the scene, with AbsolutePunk awarding it 89% and Chorus.fm calling it "one of the most solid debuts ever released," praising the combination of pop, folk, and rock influences woven through Beckett's melodic sensibility. The album has remained a touchstone of the era, cited on anniversary lists of essential pop-punk records, and served as the inspiration for the band's 2026 reunion album Almost There, conceived explicitly as its companion and reflection.
