As Night Falls / As Day Breaks
Jerk
As Night Falls / As Day Breaks is a gatefold vinyl LP by Brooklyn-based composer, producer and multi-instrumentalist Jerk (Joni Kinney), released via DeepMatter Records that brings together two separately released EPs into a single narrative-driven listening experience. The first half, as night falls, was released in November 2025 and traces the arc of a single night through eight tracks that draw on jazz, funk, trip hop, drum and bass, and experimental electronics — described by Jerk as "jazz with sharp edges and soft shadows," touching on influences ranging from MF DOOM and J Dilla to The Isley Brothers and Sam Gendel. The second half, as day breaks, followed in May 2026 and operates as the daylight counterpart, turning toward warmth, clarity, and renewal across eight further tracks that blend electroacoustic jazz, funk-leaning grooves, neo-soul, and melodic minimalism. Both halves were created in close collaboration with drummer and longtime collaborator Martine Wade.
Pressed as a single gatefold LP with Side A soundtracking the night and Side B welcoming the day, the combined record unfolds as a full dusk-to-dawn emotional arc designed to be heard from start to finish. Side A moves through tracks like "Dance Beneath the Dripping Moon," the creeping funk of "Stealthy, She Moves!," "A Divine Wrath," and the closing "Emergence and Reckoning," while Side B traces the small emotional shifts of a new day — from the groggy re-entry of "Still Dreaming" and the rhythmic pulse of "Alarmed" and "Steppin' Out" through to the reflective closer "As Long as I Breathe." As Kinney has described it, the project sits "neither day nor night, but something more ethereal" — a cinematic, immersive work that represents Jerk's most cohesive and ambitious release to date.
