Ascension
A Flock Of Seagulls
Ascension is a collaborative album by English new wave band A Flock of Seagulls, released on July 6, 2018 via August Day Recordings, and its most significant distinction is that it marks the first studio recording by all four original members of the band since their 1984 album The Story of a Young Heart. The reunion brings together vocalist and keyboardist Mike Score, drummer Ali Score, guitarist Paul Reynolds, and bassist Frank Maudsley, who recorded the album with the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra. The result is a 12-track collection of orchestral re-recordings drawn from the band's first three albums — A Flock of Seagulls (1982), Listen (1983), and The Story of a Young Heart (1984) — alongside one newly written piece, the brief instrumental title track "Ascension," which serves as the album's centrepiece and sole original composition.
The tracklist covers the full breadth of the band's classic-era catalogue, opening with their signature hit "I Ran" and moving through fan favourites such as "Space Age Love Song," "Wishing (If I Had a Photograph of You)," "Transfer Affection," and "The More You Live, the More You Love," alongside deeper cuts like "Telecommunication," "DNA," "Nightmares," and "Electrics," closing with "Man Made." Each track receives a lush orchestral arrangement that reimagines the band's signature synthesizer-driven new wave sound through sweeping strings and full symphonic backing, while the core band members perform alongside the orchestra. A limited collector's edition was also released featuring multiple disc variants including instrumental and a cappella versions of the material.
