Description

Bergtagen is the earliest chapter in Swedish folk-metal group Otyg’s recorded history: a collection of the band’s first demo recordings, originally made in 1995 and remastered from the original tapes for a 2026 reissue. Released April 17, 2026 by Hammerheart Productions, the nine-track edition precedes the more widely known full-length albums Älvefärd and Sagovindars boning. Its Swedish title can be understood as “taken by the mountain,” immediately placing the music in the enchanted, rugged world of Scandinavian folklore that would define Otyg’s work.

The album’s titles—“Trollmånens väg,” “Stentorsröster,” “Galdernatten,” “Skuggan på åsen,” “Bergtagen,” “Septembersång,” “Vid skogstjärnen står,” “Bäckafärden,” and “Otygets tid”—suggest a cycle of moonlit paths, troll lore, mountain shadows, woodland waters, and old magic. Musically, these formative recordings establish Otyg’s characteristic fusion of Swedish folk melody, rock and metal instrumentation, and atmospheric, tradition-minded songwriting. The remaster does not turn Bergtagen into a newly recorded album; rather, it makes the raw source material more accessible, documenting the group before its sound was refined on its later releases. For listeners exploring Otyg’s catalogue, it is both an archival release and a clear glimpse of the band’s mythic folk-metal language in its earliest form.
