Description

Beyond Vision is the fifth studio album by San Francisco stoner‑doom band Acid King and their first full-length in eight years, released in 2023 on Blues Funeral Recordings. Led as always by guitarist/vocalist Lori S., the band here expands its classic formula of monolithic, fuzz‑drenched riffs into a more explicitly psychedelic, cinematic direction, with songs flowing into each other as a continuous, journey‑like suite rather than discrete, radio-length tracks. The seven pieces—One Light Second Away, Mind’s Eye, 90 Seconds, Electro Magnetic, Destination Psych, Beyond Vision, and Color Trails—unfold over roughly 45 minutes at mostly languid tempos, layering tectonic riffage, swirling leads, and enveloping synth textures into an atmosphere that feels both cosmic and claustrophobic.

Written and produced by Lori S. together with Black Cobra’s Jason Landrian (guitar, synths, backing vocals), and recorded by longtime collaborator Billy Anderson, Beyond Vision marks a lineup shift that brings in Bryce Shelton (bass, synths) and Jason Willer (drums), giving the record a thicker low-end and more expansive textural palette than previous Acid King releases. Tracks like One Light Second Away and Destination Psych use long, droning introductions and ambient soundscapes before kicking into slow, hypnotic grooves, while Mind’s Eye, Electro Magnetic, and the title track ride deceptively catchy, fuzz‑coated riffs and Lori’s distant, ghostly vocals, which drift in and out of the mix like another layer of reverb rather than a narrative foreground. Critics describe the album as a “cosmic, spacey, and journey‑like” evolution of Acid King’s sound: still rooted in heavy, swinging stoner‑doom, but now treating heaviness as both earthquake and fog—something that can hit with physical force yet also linger, blur edges, and invite listeners to get lost in an interplanetary, lysergic drift.
