Description

Black Sands is the fourth studio album by British producer Simon Green, recording as Bonobo, released on March 29, 2010 via Ninja Tune. The album marked a significant leap forward in Green's ambitions as both a composer and producer, drawing together downtempo electronic music, broken beats, jazz-influenced arrangements, Afro-Latin rhythms, and orchestral strings into a cohesive and richly layered whole. Where his earlier work operated largely in the background of the UK downtempo scene, Black Sands pushed his music into the foreground — more dynamic, more emotionally direct, and more adventurous in its arrangements, with Green playing most of the instruments himself. The twelve tracks span fifty-five minutes and include three vocal contributions from British singer Andreya Triana, whose breathy, soulful voice appears on standout tracks like "Eyesdown" and "The Keeper," while the majority of the record unfolds as purely instrumental.

The album opens with the Eastern-tinged "Kiara Prelude" before moving into the bass-driven groove of "Kiara," and ranges across textures that include the woodwind-laden tension of "El Toro," the hip-hop-inflected "Kong," Latin-influenced grooves on "We Could Forever," and the jazz-ensemble thinking of "Animals." As Impose Magazine noted, "he thinks like a jazz ensemble, not like an individual," allowing the music to feel larger than any single producer's sensibility. The album closes with the nearly seven-minute title track — a Godfather-esque waltz that builds gradually through layers of horns into something genuinely cinematic. Upon release, Black Sands received widespread critical acclaim, earning a Metacritic score of 73 and Ninja Tune later credited it with moving Green "from being an underground producer of impeccable credentials to a poster boy for a new take on electronic music." It was certified Silver in the UK and has remained one of the defining records of the early 2010s electronic music landscape.
