Description

Originally released by Blue Note in 1962, Bossa Nova Soul Samba is one of tenor saxophonist Ike Quebec’s final—and most distinctive—albums. The record finds Quebec applying his warm, breathy, blues-inflected tone to the Brazilian-inspired bossa nova and samba vogue then moving through American jazz, but without abandoning the relaxed soul-jazz character that defined his late Blue Note work. Recorded with guitarist Kenny Burrell, bassist Wendell Marshall, drummer Willie Bobo, and percussionist Garvin Masseaux, it is an unusually intimate ensemble session: Quebec’s tenor and Burrell’s delicately voiced guitar share the melodic foreground, while the rhythm section supplies understated Latin motion rather than forceful swing.

The original nine-track program combines originals, Brazilian material, and unexpected adaptations, including Burrell’s “Loie,” “Lloro Tu Despedida,” Dvořák’s “Goin’ Home,” Quebec’s “Me ’n You” and “Blue Samba,” Liszt’s “Liebestraum,” “Shu Shu,” “Favela,” and “Linda Flor.” The 2026 Blue Note Tone Poet Series edition presents the album as a stereo, audiophile-focused vinyl reissue, preserving its unhurried atmosphere and finely balanced instrumental interplay. Rather than presenting bossa nova as novelty music, Bossa Nova Soul Samba absorbs its light percussion, gently syncopated pulse, and melodic ease into Quebec’s deeply personal style, creating a graceful late-career statement from an artist whose life and recording career ended the following year.
