Caution

Caution is Mariah Carey’s fifteenth studio album, released on November 16, 2018 through Epic Records and widely praised as a sleek, modern R&B record that shows her staying current without chasing trends. Recorded between January and August 2018, it arrived four years after Me. I Am Mariah… The Elusive Chanteuse and marks her first full‑length since signing to Epic in 2015, offering a concise 10‑track, 38‑minute set rooted in R&B and hip‑hop with touches of EDM, psychedelia, and Latin pop. Carey co‑writes every song and works with producers like Nineteen85, Mustard, Timbaland, Jermaine Dupri, Skrillex, and others, while featuring Ty Dolla $ign, Slick Rick, Blood Orange (Dev Hynes), and Gunna on select tracks.

Musically and lyrically, Caution leans into sensual, low‑key grooves and mid‑tempo beats rather than big, belting ballads, highlighting her subtler strengths in tone, phrasing, and layered harmonies. Songs such as “With You,” “The Distance,” “Caution,” and “8th Grade” wrap her voice around crisp, contemporary production, while more playful cuts like “GTFO,” “A No No,” and “Stay Long Love You” deliver dismissive, self‑protective sass aimed at lovers and critics alike. Critics have celebrated the album as an exquisite blend of hip‑hop‑infused pop and classic Mariah charm—retro yet current—with many noting that, at this stage in her career, she sounds like a veteran artist with nothing left to prove, simply basking in a sound she helped invent and refine.
