Description

Conspiracy Theory is the tenth studio album from Detroit-born flutist Althea René, released on April 24, 2026 via Trippin 'n Rhythm Records. The album arrives a year after her 18 Karat EP and continues her standing as one of the most consistent and distinctive voices in contemporary smooth jazz. Spanning ten tracks and running approximately 44 minutes, the record blends smooth jazz, soul, funk, and R&B, with René's flute — warm, expressive, and front and center throughout — driving the material with an authority more commonly associated with saxophone or guitar. Production duties are split between multi-instrumentalist Ryan La Valette, who produces half the album, and keyboardist Caleb Middleton, with the supporting cast including bassist Eric Laple and guitarist Jordan Love.

The album is notable for the depth of its collaborative roster, drawing heavily from René's Trippin 'n Rhythm labelmates. Smooth Jazz Daily praised it as "a sophisticated addition to her discography" that "underlines her status as one of the premier flutists in the smooth jazz scene." Standout moments include the elegant opener "Classy" (with La Valette on guitar synthesizer), the energetic title track featuring BK Jackson, the sultry "Seductress" with Skinny Hightower, and the trumpet-accented "Onyx" with Lin Rountree. The album closes with the gentle "Stuck On You." Throughout, the record strikes a balance that is easy on the ear without feeling disposable — one reviewer described it as a pleasurable cocktail of funky basslines, subtle electronics, and elegant jazz passages suited equally to relaxation or an evening gathering.
