Cryptic (Re-Issue) is a 2026 deluxe re‑release of Edge Of Sanity’s seventh album, originally issued in 1997 as the band’s only record without founding mastermind Dan Swanö on vocals. Featuring new frontman Robert Karlsson (later of Scar Symmetry) and fully remastered audio overseen by Swanö as part of Century Media’s broader catalogue campaign, this edition presents Cryptic as a focused, groove‑heavy slice of Swedish melodic death metal rather than the oddity it was long treated as in their discography. The core eight‑track album—“Hell Written,” “Uncontroll Me,” “No Destiny,” “Demon I,” “Not of This World,” “Dead I Walk,” “Born, Breed, Bleeding,” and “Bleed You Dry”—leans on compact song structures, thick riffs, and death ’n’ roll swing more than the sprawling prog‑death approach of Crimson or Infernal.

This reissue appears as a limited deluxe 2‑CD jewelcase in slipcase/O‑card, with Disc 1 containing the 2026 remaster and Disc 2 adding bonus material (demos or session extras, depending on edition), finally giving the record a more substantial archival treatment. Critics and long‑time fans remain split—some still see Cryptic as a rushed, less adventurous follow‑up, while others argue that, taken on its own terms, it’s a solid, hooky death‑metal album whose death ’n’ roll grooves (“No Destiny,” “Dead I Walk”) and more traditional melodeath touches (“Not of This World”) are easier to appreciate now that the context around Swanö’s exit is better understood. The new remaster sharpens the guitars and balances the loud, punchy drums, helping underline what many listeners now hear as the album’s distinct identity: a darker, more straightforward, riff‑driven Edge Of Sanity that still carries echoes of their earlier innovation even as it pursues a more streamlined, aggressive path.
