Released on August 7, 2026 through the Mountain Goats’ Cadmean Dawn label, Days is the group’s 24th studio album: a 12-song, 36-minute set produced by John Congleton. Written by frontman John Darnielle, it uses a crowded gallery of cultural references—Layne Staley, Charlie Sheen, Candlebox, Renaissance singer Annie Haslam, Eddie Nash, the Grateful Dead, Woodstock ’99, and Venom—to examine memory, mortality, fixation, and the strange items people carry with them through time. The record is less a concept album than a collection of vividly specific scenes and characters, connected by Darnielle’s awareness that the past can be reassessed but never fully recovered.
