Description

Descent is the twelfth studio album by Yonkers, New York death metal veterans Immolation, released on April 10, 2026 through Nuclear Blast Records. It arrives four years after the critically acclaimed Acts of God (2022) and marks another chapter in one of the most consistent careers in extreme metal — a band now 37 years deep into their existence without having released what reviewers have described as an outright bad record. Produced with the same unsparing density that has characterized the band's output since the early 1990s, Descent was preceded by three singles — "Adversary" and "Attrition" in the months before release, with "Bend Towards the Dark" dropping on the album's release day — all accompanied by videos directed by guitarist Robert Vigna. The album runs approximately 41 minutes across 10 tracks, closing with the six-minute title track.

Sonically, Descent operates squarely within the dissonant, cavernous death metal template that Immolation helped pioneer and that has since influenced a generation of bands including Dead Congregation and Cruciamentum. The album moves with a command of dynamics and pacing that belies its surface brutality: the opener "These Vengeful Winds" balances groove with aggression, "God's Last Breath" drops into funeral-doom heaviness with Ross Dolan's deep, viscerally evil-sounding vocals front and center, "Bend Towards the Dark" unleashes full-throttle speed, and the penultimate "Banished" functions as a spare three-minute interlude building tension before the title track's brutally triumphant close. Vigna's guitar work — characterized by off-kilter, infectious solos and high riff variety — and Steve Shalaty's intense drumming are widely cited as particular strengths. Critical reception has been extremely enthusiastic, with Toilet Ov Hell awarding 4.5 out of 5 and multiple reviewers placing the album among the best death metal releases of 2026, calling it a high-water mark in the band's already distinguished catalogue.
