Description

Dolly is a 2009 four-CD, 99-track career-spanning box set. Released by Sony Legacy, this edition surveys Parton’s recording life from her earliest recordings as a teenager in the late 1950s through 1993’s “Romeo.” It is unusually broad in scope, including early Goldband, Mercury, and Monument recordings; extensive selections from her RCA years; later Columbia material; solo hits; duets; and eight previously unreleased tracks.

The first two discs trace Parton’s emergence from youthful country and pop recordings into the self-assured songwriter behind “Dumb Blonde,” “Just Because I’m a Woman,” “Joshua,” “Coat of Many Colors,” and “My Tennessee Mountain Home.” The final discs move through her landmark 1970s and 1980s successes—“Jolene,” “I Will Always Love You,” “Here You Come Again,” “9 to 5,” and “Tennessee Homesick Blues”—as well as key collaborations with Porter Wagoner, Kenny Rogers, Willie Nelson, and others. Far more than a conventional greatest-hits package, Dolly functions as an expansive musical biography: it reveals how a precocious East Tennessee singer became a commanding country storyteller, crossover star, roots-music interpreter, and prolific collaborator.
