Description

Elephant Eyelash is the second studio album by Cincinnati-based indie band Why?, led by Jonathan "Yoni" Wolf, originally released by Anticon on September 26, 2005. The album marked a pivotal shift for Wolf, who had previously recorded largely as a solo act, now working with a full band for the first time on a proper LP. Sitting at the intersection of indie rock and hip-hop, the twelve-track album channels Wolf's densely imagistic lyricism through melodic, softly angular songwriting — oblique in structure but warmly accessible in feel. Standouts like "Sanddollars," "Gemini (Birthday Song)," and "Rubber Traits" showcase his gift for bending verse-chorus conventions into something more closely resembling prose poetry set to off-kilter pop arrangements, all recorded at home in a manner that PopMatters compared to Kate Bush's Aerial in its intimate, self-contained domestic atmosphere. The album has been out of print on vinyl since 2018.

The 20th Anniversary Edition, released May 22, 2026 on Wolf's own Waterlines label, is a deluxe 2xLP gatefold pressing limited to 1,500 copies, spread across two custom vinyl colors: "patience mountain" (pale violet) for the original album and "light rain" (pale blue) for the bonus material. That second slab collects the surrounding era's EPs — the Sanddollars EP, the Rubber Traits EP, and the Dumb Hummer 7" — alongside an unreleased 2005 song called "Bangs" described as a bonus dictaphone recording from the period, bringing the full running order to 24 tracks. The edition offers the most complete portrait yet of Where Why? stood at one of the most creatively fertile moments in their catalog.
