Dave Matthews Band’s Everyday, released in February 2001, is the group’s fourth studio album and one of the sharpest stylistic departures in its catalog. After the band set aside sessions with longtime producer Steve Lillywhite, Dave Matthews wrote a new set of 12 songs with producer Glen Ballard in a remarkably compressed period. Ballard then shaped the recordings into concise, electric-guitar-centered rock songs, favoring clear hooks and streamlined arrangements over the sprawling, improvisatory interplay associated with the band’s earlier work.

The result is a polished but still energetic record led by “I Did It,” “When the World Ends,” “The Space Between,” “So Right,” and the uplifting title track. “The Space Between” balances Matthews’s restless vocal phrasing with a more radio-ready chorus, while “Mother Father” brings in Carlos Santana on guitar and Karl Perazzo on percussion; Vusi Mahlasela contributes vocals to “Everyday.” The album debuted at No. 1 in the United States and was eventually certified triple platinum, though its pop-minded production divided some listeners who preferred the band’s looser, ensemble-driven sound.
