Get Yourself A Friend

Ultra Q’s Get Yourself A Friend is a 2021 EP that marks a sharper, more defined step for the Oakland band led by Jakob Armstrong. After earlier work under names like Jakob Danger and Mt. Eddy, Ultra Q uses this release to lean into a stylish indie-rock and post-punk sound shaped by the early-2000s garage revival. The songs draw on the wiry energy of bands like The Strokes and Interpol, with jangling guitars, tight drums, anxious vocals, and a glossy sense of youthful urgency.

Across tracks such as “Pupkin,” “It’s Permanent,” “Bowman,” “Straight Jacket,” “Handheld,” and the title track, the EP circles around growing up, online connection, nostalgia, and the awkward shift from youth into adulthood. It is concise and energetic, but also reflective, with a mood that mixes danceable guitar rock with a touch of melancholy. Get Yourself A Friend feels like a coming-of-age record in miniature: stylish, restless, and eager to turn familiar indie-rock influences into something personal.
