Godzilla 2000: Millennium

Takayuki Hattori’s Godzilla 2000: Millennium is the original soundtrack for Toho’s 1999 film, the opening entry in the franchise’s Millennium series. The 36-track, nearly hour-long album combines Hattori’s new material with Akira Ifukube’s foundational Godzilla theme, linking the film’s fresh continuity to the series’ classic musical identity. The score follows the film’s main dramatic arc—from Godzilla’s landfall in Nemuro and the discovery of a mysterious extraterrestrial object to the military response, the alien threat’s transformation into Orga, and the climactic confrontation in Shinjuku.

Hattori’s approach is more modern and electronic than Ifukube’s original orchestral monster-movie style, using synthesizer textures, urgent rhythmic figures, ominous brass-like keyboard writing, and atmospheric suspense cues to create a late-1990s science-fiction tone. Tracks such as “The Object from Outer Space,” “Giant UFO Approaching,” “Earth Invasion,” “Tensions on the Rise/The Metamorphosis,” and “Orga: Irony of Fate” emphasize the film’s alien-invasion and bio-horror elements, while “Thinking of My Dad” and “Miraculous Survival” provide a more human, reflective counterpoint. The album closes with “Godzilla’s Theme” by Ifukube, making the soundtrack both a bold attempt to update the series’ sound and a respectful acknowledgment of the musical language most closely associated with the King of the Monsters.
