Description

HIStory: Past, Present and Future, Book I is Michael Jackson’s ninth studio album and first double album, released in June 1995 as his follow‑up to Dangerous. Structurally it is split into two discs: HIStory Begins, a 15‑track greatest‑hits set spanning Off the Wall through Dangerous, and HIStory Continues, an album of new material recorded between late 1994 and early 1995. The first disc revisits major singles such as “Rock with You,” “Billie Jean,” “Beat It,” “Bad,” “The Way You Make Me Feel,” “Black or White,” and “Heal the World,” framing the project as both a retrospective of Jackson’s commercial peak and a preface to the more confrontational second disc.

The new‑material disc is widely regarded as Jackson’s most explicitly personal and politically charged work, created in the aftermath of intense media scrutiny and child abuse allegations. Songs like “Scream” (a duet with Janet Jackson), “They Don’t Care About Us,” “Tabloid Junkie,” and “D.S.” channel anger, paranoia, and frustration at the press, the justice system, and public perception, while “Stranger in Moscow” and “Childhood” convey isolation and psychological vulnerability. This darker material is balanced by grand ballads and anthems such as “You Are Not Alone,” “Earth Song,” “History,” and the closing cover of “Smile,” which introduce themes of love, environmental concern, and cautious optimism. Commercially, HIStory debuted at number one in numerous countries and became the best‑selling multi‑disc album of all time, but its tone—abrasive, defensive, and often bleak—has made it one of the most debated entries in his catalogue, celebrated by some as his most introspective and experimental statement and dismissed by others as overwrought and self‑pitying.
