Description

Martyr’s Hopeless Hopes (Reissue) revisits the Quebec technical death-metal band’s 1997 debut, a formative release in the late-1990s Canadian extreme-metal underground. Released through Relapse Records on July 31, 2026, the edition gives the album its first vinyl and CD availability in more than a decade. The reissue is not simply archival: it has been fully remixed by Francis Perron, with input from Martyr’s Daniel and François Mongrain, and remastered by Maor Appelbaum to bring greater clarity and force to its densely layered performances.

Across ten tracks, Hopeless Hopes combines rapid, aggressive death-metal riffing with complex tempo changes, melodic guitar leads, twin harmonies, and progressive structures. The title track, “Prototype,” “Elementals,” “Non Conformis,” “Ostrogoth,” “The Blind’s Reflection,” “Inner Peace,” “Ars Nova,” “Nipskÿ,” and brief closer “Enoz Praw” demonstrate a band already interested in technical precision without abandoning physical impact. Its longer pieces frequently move through several rhythmic and melodic ideas, with subtle jazz and progressive-metal influences shaping the guitar work. The 2026 mix emphasizes the individual instrumental details that could be obscured on the original production, allowing this intense, ambitious debut to land as both a document of Martyr’s early vision and a newly revitalized technical death-metal record.
