Description
I Used To Know Her is the second compilation album by H.E.R., released on August 30, 2019 through RCA Records. It collects material from her two 2018 EPs—I Used to Know Her: The Prelude and I Used to Know Her: Part 2—and expands them into a 19‑track project with additional songs and full‑length versions of earlier interludes like “Going,” “Be On My Way,” and “Lord Is Coming.” The set features key tracks such as “Lost Souls” (with DJ Scratch), “Fate,” “Carried Away,” “Could’ve Been” (featuring Bryson Tiller), “Hard Place,” “Take You There,” and “Lord Is Coming,” blending her signature atmospheric R&B with more organic acoustic guitar and piano, much of it played by H.E.R. herself.
Artistically, the album shows her broadening her palette and voice: she experiments with rapping on “Lost Souls,” a tribute to Lauryn Hill’s “Lost Ones,” while songs like “Against Me” and “Feel a Way” return to the moody, late‑night feel of her 2017 self‑titled project. Lyrically, she moves between intimate relationship confessions (“Could’ve Been,” “Take You There”), conflicted ambition (“Hard Place”), and pointed social commentary on materialism, racism, and family separation in “Lord Is Coming,” which evolves from spoken‑word into a haunting, gospel‑tinged climax. The project earned a Grammy nomination for Album of the Year at the 62nd Grammy Awards—her second straight nod in that category—while “Could’ve Been” and “Hard Place” picked up multiple nominations, underscoring how this compilation functions as both a consolidation of her early work and a bold step toward more politically engaged, musically varied R&B.
