...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead’s IX is the band’s ninth studio album, released in 2014, and it finds the Austin group continuing their blend of post-hardcore intensity, art-rock ambition, and widescreen alternative rock drama. Built around Conrad Keely and Jason Reece’s long-running partnership, the album has the familiar Trail of Dead ingredients: surging drums, dense guitars, urgent vocals, and songs that often feel larger and more theatrical than standard rock structures.

The album opens with forceful, melodic tracks like “The Doomsday Book,” “Jaded Apostles,” and “A Million Random Digits,” but it also stretches into more atmospheric and experimental territory as it progresses. Songs such as “The Ghost Within,” “How to Avoid Huge Ships,” “Bus Lines,” and “Sound of the Silk” emphasize dynamic build-ups, rhythmic tension, piano and string textures, and a sense of dramatic sprawl. IX may not radically reinvent the band’s sound, but it shows them refining their strengths into a sturdy, emotionally charged late-career record with both heaviness and grandeur.
