Description
On Lunaris, Bruce Liu builds a quiet, moonlit world from familiar repertoire and less obvious nocturnal shades. Beethoven’s “Moonlight” Sonata has weight without turning heavy, while Debussy’s “Clair de lune” glows through Liu’s finely graded touch and instinct for letting a phrase breathe. What keeps the album from feeling like a collection of night-themed favourites is the pacing: shadows, reflections and sudden flashes of brightness pass naturally from one piece to the next.
Compared with Waves, Liu’s colourful 2023 album, Lunaris is more inward and spacious. The quicksilver precision is still there, but the emphasis falls on resonance, silence and the piano’s softer colours. Listeners who know his live Chopin Competition recording will also recognise that balance of control and spontaneity, though here it is placed inside a more carefully shaped studio atmosphere. This is an easy record to return to late in the evening, when its small shifts of colour and touch become especially vivid.
