"Master of Reality" is Black Sabbath's third studio album, released in July 1971 on Vertigo Records in the UK and Warner Bros. Records in the United States. Recorded at Island Studios in London and produced by Rodger Bain, the album is widely considered one of the most pivotal records in the history of heavy metal. Most notably, guitarist Tony Iommi — already playing with the tips of two fingers missing from an industrial accident — down-tuned his guitar strings to C# to reduce tension and make playing easier, a decision that inadvertently created one of the heaviest, most cavernous guitar tones ever committed to tape. The result was a sound so thick and crushing that it essentially invented the template for doom metal and stoner rock decades before those genres had names.

The album opens with the brief acoustic instrumental "Sweet Leaf," which then detonates into a riff of almost tectonic weight — the song itself being an ode to marijuana, setting a countercultural tone that runs through much of the record. Other standout tracks include "Children of the Grave," a propulsive, politically charged anti-war anthem driven by one of Iommi's most memorable riffs, and "Into the Void," which closes the album with an epic, slow-burning descent into heaviness. "Solitude" offers a rare moment of pastoral quiet, featuring flute and acoustic guitar, demonstrating the band's range beyond pure sonic brutality. Ozzy Osbourne's vocals throughout are raw and emotive, and Bill Ward's drumming and Geezer Butler's bass playing are locked in tight, forming one of rock's most cohesive rhythm sections.
