Description

Prong’s Prove You Wrong is the New York trio’s third album, released in 1991, and it catches them in a transitional phase where their tight crossover‑thrash roots mutate into something more groove‑oriented and subtly industrial. The record’s 13 tracks are built on Tommy Victor’s staccato, palm‑muted riffing, Troy Gregory’s gritty bass, and Ted Parsons’ precise, almost mechanical drumming, giving songs a jagged, stop‑start momentum that feels as influenced by Helmet and Killing Joke as by classic thrash. Opener “Irrelevant Thoughts” sets the pace with skronking, squealing guitar textures over tribal drum patterns, while the title track “Prove You Wrong” rides an off‑kilter, almost country‑inflected groove that shows the band’s willingness to play with unexpected rhythms and tones.

Across the album, Prong mix sharp, dissonant riffs with hooky, shouted choruses, so tracks like “Unconditional,” “Positively Blind,” “Hell If I Could,” “Pointless,” “Torn Between,” and “Brainwave” feel both angular and strangely catchy. Gregory takes lead vocals on a handful of songs (“Unconditional,” “Hell If I Could,” “Brainwave”), adding a slightly different character to those cuts, while Victor’s own delivery grows more melodic and confident than on earlier releases, especially in the choruses. Lyrically the record leans into cynical, confrontational themes—alienation, mistrust, and “sticking it to the man”—which, combined with the dry, punchy production, gives it a claustrophobic, urban feel that foreshadows the band’s later move toward full industrial metal on Cleansing.
