Description

Convulse’s Reflections (Reissue) revisits the Finnish band’s 1994 second album, a record that takes a dramatic turn away from the raw, morbid death metal of their debut World Without God. Here, Convulse fold their heavy riffs and harsh vocals into a looser “death ’n’ roll” approach, drawing on groove-oriented hard rock, psychedelic atmosphere, and experimental textures. The result is still dark and forceful, but it is more rhythmically fluid and stylistically adventurous than the band’s earlier material. Its 2026 reissue marks the album’s first appearance on vinyl and presents it with a new layout and remastered audio through Relapse Records.

The original nine-track program runs about 37 minutes and includes “The Rite of Sunshine,” “The Green Is Grey,” “Years of Decay,” “Memories,” “The Nation Cries,” “Crying Back Yesterday,” “Lost Equilibrium,” and “The New Arrival.” The songs shift between chugging riffs, bluesy or funk-leaning grooves, and darker passages that retain Convulse’s death-metal weight; the closer “The New Arrival” is particularly notable for its use of techno-style breaks. Although Reflections was overlooked relative to World Without God, the reissue frames it as a vital document of the group’s early-1990s transformation from straightforward Finnish death metal into something stranger, more diverse, and more groove-conscious.
