Description

Sanctuary’s Refuge Denied is the Seattle band’s debut album, issued through Epic Records and combining American power metal with speed- and thrash-metal aggression. Produced principally by Megadeth’s Dave Mustaine, its nine tracks place Warrel Dane’s piercing upper-register vocals above the twin guitars of Lenny Rutledge and Sean Blosl, supported by bassist Jim Sheppard and drummer Dave Budbill. The defining element is intensity: opener “Battle Angels” establishes the combination of soaring vocal lines and forceful riffing, while “Termination Force,” “Die for My Sins,” and “Soldiers of Steel” develop its darker, combative character. Release listings differ between 1987 and 1988, with original vinyl editions documented under 1987.

The album’s most unexpected selection is Jefferson Airplane’s “White Rabbit,” which transfers Grace Slick’s psychedelic song into Sanctuary’s metallic setting and features a guest guitar solo from Mustaine; Paul Lani receives the production credit for that track. Elsewhere, “Ascension to Destiny” and “The Third War” sustain the record’s dramatic attack before the nearly six-minute “Veil of Disguise” closes the sequence. Across the album, Dane’s high, theatrical delivery and the guitars’ combination of melody and aggression give the music a distinctive identity, making Refuge Denied a concentrated introduction to the original five-piece lineup rather than simply an extension of its producer’s thrash-metal sound.
