Released on May 29, 2026 via Deutsche Grammophon, Schubert: Treasures is a landmark recording by the Austrian pianist Rudolf Buchbinder, timed to coincide with his 80th birthday. The two-CD set gathers all 160 of Schubert's piano dances published during the composer's lifetime — encompassing eight distinct cycles of waltzes, Ländler, German dances, and Ecossaises — representing a deeply personal project for Buchbinder, who has lived with this repertoire since childhood. The works were recorded at the Mozart-Saal of the Wiener Konzerthaus in July 2024 and are also available in Dolby Atmos, reflecting the intimacy that the venue and format lend to music that is, at its core, domestic and convivial in origin.

As Buchbinder himself writes in the album's liner notes, "Franz Schubert's dances have accompanied me throughout my life. His dances — like his songs — are miniature worlds with a gigantic heart." The pieces originated in the dance culture of early 19th-century Vienna, where waltzes, Ländler, and Ecossaises served the era's appetite for sociable entertainment, yet beneath their graceful surfaces lies a deeper emotional world — one shot through with longing and melancholy, as if Schubert sensed the brevity of his own life. Critics have noted that many of the individual tracks last under a minute, yet together they accumulate into something much larger, with reviewers comparing certain passages to Chopin and praising Buchbinder's ability to reveal the subtle balance between choreographic lightness and compositional depth that makes this underestimated corner of Schubert's output so quietly extraordinary.
