Description

Symphony of Death is an extended play by German heavy metal veterans Grave Digger, originally released in 1994 on G.U.N. Records — though at nearly 25 minutes across seven tracks, it occupies a space between EP and short album. It arrived in the wake of The Reaper (1993), the band's comeback record that re-established them after a mid-career hiatus and lineup consolidation, and serves as a bridge between that album's incendiary speed metal approach and the more epic, historically themed power metal sound the band would fully develop on Heart of Darkness (1995). The lineup on the release — Chris Boltendahl on vocals, Uwe Lulis on guitar, Thomas Göttlich on bass, and Jörg Michael on drums — is the same core unit responsible for The Reaper, and the material reflects a band in confident creative transition.

The release opens with a brief "Intro" before launching into the propulsive title track "Symphony of Death," a charging, anthemic piece built around themes of war, sacrifice, and the relentless cycle of human violence — lyrically in keeping with the dark historical preoccupations that would define Grave Digger's subsequent Middle Ages trilogy. Metal Archives describes the EP as drawing on remaining material from The Reaper sessions and blending it with the first signs of the modern Grave Digger formula, calling it "an invaluably critical stepping stone in Grave Digger's continuing evolution." Tracks like "Back to the Roots," "House of Horror," and closer "Wild and Dangerous" round out the collection with the kind of no-frills, heavy-riffing Teutonic metal the band has always been known for — absent the ballads, built entirely on speed and aggression.
