Description
Lisa Loeb & Nine Stories’ Tails is their 1995 major-label debut, released September 26 through Geffen Records. Produced by Loeb and Juan Patiño, the 13-track collection blends acoustic singer-songwriter intimacy with melodic alternative rock, placing her clear vocals and intricate guitar writing within full-band arrangements. Its defining quality is candor, with songs that move through attraction, uncertainty, frustration, and separation in a conversational but emotionally searching voice. “It’s Over” opens the record with a declaration of finality, while “Snow Day,” “Taffy,” and “Do You Sleep?” explore the less settled territory of relationships that resist easy answers. All the songs were written by Loeb, giving the approximately 44-minute album a consistent personal perspective.
The arrangements alternate between guitar-driven energy and quieter moments, allowing the tenderness of “Sandalwood” to sit alongside the sharper attack of “Waiting for Wednesday.” “Hurricane,” the album’s longest track, gives its emotional narrative more space, while “Rose-Colored Times,” “Alone,” and “Garden of Delights” broaden the sequence beyond its best-known singles. Closing track “Stay (I Missed You)” brings the focus back to Loeb’s distinctive combination of flowing phrasing, acoustic detail, and conflicted romantic reflection. Several songs—including “It’s Over,” “Snow Day,” “Do You Sleep?,” and “Hurricane”—had appeared in earlier form on her independently released Purple Tape, making Tails both an introduction to a wider audience and a fuller realization of material she had already developed.
