Description

HIM’s Tears On Tape is the Finnish “love metal” band’s eighth and final studio album, released in spring 2013 and conceived as a kind of “modern retro” homage to their heroes. Recorded in Helsinki with longtime producer Hiili Hiilesmaa and mixed in London by Tim Palmer, it reconnects with the heavier, doom‑tinged side of the band while keeping their melodic, gothic romanticism at the forefront. Vocalist Ville Valo described the sound as “Roy Orbison meeting Metallica”: sentimental and dream‑like, but also nasty, messy, and driven by thick, knuckle‑headed riffs inspired by classic metal and old horror cinema.

Musically, the record runs through 13 tracks that weave together full songs and instrumental interludes, a first for HIM’s discography. Openers like “Unleash the Red” and “All Lips Go Blue” set the tone with organ‑like ambience and heavy, cathedral‑style riffs, while standout cuts such as the title track, “I Will Be the End of You,” and “Into the Night” revisit the band’s recurring themes of doomed romance, addiction, and the thin line between salvation and self‑destruction. Valo has said the album title refers to how songs become emotional milestones—“tears on tape” left by artists whose recorded confessions help listeners navigate their own lives, an idea echoed in the record’s blend of melancholic lyrics and anthemic choruses.
