Description

Sultans of Ping F.C.’s Teenage Drug is the Cork, Ireland band’s second album, released by Epic Records in March 1994. It continues the group’s gleefully unruly blend of punk, indie rock, garage-pop hooks, and absurdist humor, but with a slightly more varied and polished sound than their debut, Casual Sex in the Cineplex. The 14-track record is driven by short, boisterous songs, choppy guitars, shout-along choruses, and the band’s deliberately unserious, mischievous lyrical style. It reached No. 57 on the UK Albums Chart, reflecting the group’s cult standing in the mid-1990s British and Irish alternative scene.

The album opens with its title track and includes fan favorites such as “Wake Up and Scratch Me,” “Teenage Punks,” “Michiko,” “Psychopath,” “Terrorist Angel,” “Teenrage Rock n Roll Girl,” “Pussycat,” and “Red Cadillac and a Black Moustache.” Songs frequently pair romantic frustration, adolescent boredom, and pop-cultural nonsense with energetic two- or three-minute punk-pop arrangements, making the record feel playful even when its lyrics become darker or more eccentric. “Wake Up and Scratch Me” captures the Sultans’ noisy, irreverent approach, while “Michiko” adds a more melodic, pop-oriented dimension. Overall, Teenage Drug is a fast, funny, and chaotic album that preserves the Sultans of Ping F.C.’s reputation for turning scrappy punk energy into catchy, knowingly ridiculous alternative rock.
