Description
Amon Amarth’s The Allfather Awakens is the Swedish melodic death metal band’s thirteenth studio album, released October 2, 2026, through Metal Blade Records. Recorded across two sessions at producer Jacob Hansen’s studio in Denmark, its ten tracks combine Johan Hegg’s guttural vocals with harmonized guitar melodies, pounding rhythms, and choruses built for a festival crowd. Odin provides a thematic thread rather than a continuous storyline: “Gjallarhorn” opens with a monumental call to battle, “Eight Legs of Thunder” evokes his eight-legged horse Sleipnir, and “Kvasir’s Blood” draws further into Norse mythology. The emphasis is on grandeur, turning ancient tales into direct, muscular metal anthems.
The clearest departure comes midway through with “Upphaf,” the band’s first acoustic piece, which incorporates a stanza from the Old Norse poem Völuspá. Its quieter setting interrupts the album’s martial momentum before “Die with a War Cry” restores the heavier attack. “Raven God” adds a folk-tinged melodic lift, while the nearly seven-minute closer “Ascending Like an Eagle” gives the arrangements more room to unfold. That balance makes the record more a reaffirmation than a reinvention: listeners drawn to Amon Amarth’s mythological storytelling and commanding hooks will find familiar strengths, though reviews differ on whether its dependable formula remains stirring or has become too predictable.
