The Dream Is Over is the second album by Toronto punk band PUP, released May 27, 2016 through Royal Mountain in Canada and SideOneDummy worldwide, and often cited as the moment they fully locked in their chaotic, anthemic sound. Its title comes from a doctor’s verdict to singer Stefan Babcock after discovering serious vocal‑cord damage—“the dream is over”—a phrase the band turned into a defiant rallying cry rather than a eulogy. Across ten tracks and 30 frenzied minutes, they fuse pop‑punk hooks, post‑hardcore bite, and a dash of grunge into red‑lining guitar attacks and shout‑along choruses, from opener If This Tour Doesn’t Kill You, I Will (which bleeds straight into DVP) through My Life Is Over and I Couldn’t Be Happier, Sleep in the Heat, The Coast, Old Wounds, and Pine Point.

Lyrically, the record is a gnashing, often darkly funny chronicle of burnout, self‑loathing, and the ugly side of chasing your dream in a touring band. Babcock’s narrators lash out at bandmates, lovers, and themselves, but under the bile is a very pragmatic, human sense of “what now?”—many songs read like involuntary break‑up letters to relationships, scenes, or versions of himself that no longer work. Critics praised the album’s ability to turn that angst into a kind of superpower: pile‑on gang vocals that sound like restraining orders and pep talks at once, hooks big enough to scream in a packed club, and a relentless pace that feels like squeezing 45 minutes of emotion into a half‑hour. As the band themselves reflected on its 10th anniversary, The Dream Is Over has since become a cult touchstone for fans who saw their own anxiety, bad luck, and stubborn hope reflected in its noise—a vitriolic roller coaster that somehow leaves you feeling less alone.
