Description

The Glass is a double A‑side single release featuring two versions of the same song: a reinterpretation by H.E.R. and the original by Foo Fighters. Foo Fighters first released “The Glass” on their 2023 album But Here We Are, a project written in the wake of drummer Taylor Hawkins’ death, with Dave Grohl handling drum duties; H.E.R. later performed the song with the band on Saturday Night Live and then recorded her own studio rendition. In November 2023, the two versions were issued together as a digital and 7‑inch double A‑side: H.E.R.’s delicate, guitar‑driven take appears as the A‑side, with Foo Fighters’ album version on the flip.

Thematically, both versions of “The Glass” revolve around grief, absence, and emotional distance, using the image of standing on one side of a pane of glass—seeing someone clearly but being unable to reach them—as a metaphor for lost love and loved ones. The Foo Fighters’ rendition frames these lyrics in a sweeping rock ballad with layered guitars and a soaring vocal from Grohl, echoing the broader cathartic tone of But Here We Are. H.E.R.’s version strips the song down to a more intimate R&B/neo‑soul palette, emphasizing her vocals and guitar to “extract new sonic and emotional layers” from the original, as one press release put it. Together, the paired recordings function less like a traditional album and more like a focused collaborative project that highlights how a single song can shift meaning and feel when filtered through rock and R&B sensibilities.
