The Journey - Part 1
The Kinks
The Journey – Part 1 is a 2023 compilation by The Kinks, released as the first instalment of a multi‑part anthology marking the band’s 60th anniversary. Rather than present the material chronologically, Ray Davies, Dave Davies, and Mick Avory hand‑picked and sequenced songs to “reflect the trials and tribulations” of their shared life in the band, making the set play less like a greatest‑hits disc and more like a themed narrative about growing up, chasing success, losing innocence, and looking back. Issued as a 30‑track 2LP and an expanded 36‑track 2CD, it mixes big hits, key album cuts, and B‑sides, all in original recordings, newly remastered for this project.
The compilation is split into four conceptual “sides.” Side 1 (“Songs about becoming a man, the search for adventure, finding an identity and a girl”) leans on early British Invasion power—“You Really Got Me,” “All Day and All of the Night,” “Tired of Waiting for You,” and other mid‑’60s singles that capture raw youth and swagger. Side 2 (“Songs of ambition achieved, bitter taste of success, loss of friends, the past comes back and bites you in the back‑side”) shifts into more reflective late‑’60s/’70s material like “Dead End Street,” “Supersonic Rocket Ship,” “Schooldays,” and “I’m in Disgrace,” songs where fame and adulthood come with disappointment and social critique. Sides 3 and 4 (“Days and nights of a lost soul, songs of regret and reflection of happier times” and “A new start, a new love, but have you really changed?”) gather more melancholy and nostalgic pieces—“Days,” “Strangers,” “Where Have All the Good Times Gone,” “Celluloid Heroes,” “Sitting in the Midday Sun,” among others—turning The Journey – Part 1 into a thoughtful self‑portrait that invites listeners to hear familiar songs as chapters in a long, bittersweet life story rather than isolated hits.
