Description

Alison Moyet’s The Minutes is her eighth solo studio album, released in May 2013, and a decisive return to electronic music without simply revisiting her Yazoo years. Written with and produced by Guy Sigsworth, its 11 tracks combine synth-pop, R&B, club rhythms, and experimental programming around Moyet’s rich, commanding voice. “Horizon Flame” opens with sweeping strings and icy electronics, while “Changeling” introduces fractured rhythms and a dramatic chorus. “When I Was Your Girl” provides the clearest bridge to her earlier solo work, placing an emotionally exposed vocal against substantial bass, guitar, and strings. The defining quality is reinvention: familiar vocal power finding new expression through contemporary production.

That partnership gives the album room to move between dance-floor energy and more inward-looking material. “Apple Kisses” sets Moyet against a snarling bass line, and “Right as Rain” draws on house music, while “A Place to Stay” turns toward the vulnerability of a torch song. “Filigree” supplies a brighter counterweight, reflecting on fleeting moments of happiness, before “All Signs of Life” builds into drum-and-bass rhythms and “Rung by the Tide” closes with bells, choir-like textures, and a darker atmosphere. Rather than treating electronics as a nostalgic backdrop, The Minutes makes them an active counterpart to Moyet’s expressive singing, connecting the synth-pop foundations of her career with a more exploratory musical direction.
