The Time Of Our Lives
Miley Cyrus
The Time of Our Lives is the debut extended play by American recording artist Miley Cyrus, released on August 28, 2009 via Hollywood Records — initially as a Walmart exclusive in the United States before receiving a wider international release in October 2009. The 8-track, approximately 30-minute EP was originally conceived as a tie-in to Cyrus's collaborative clothing line with French fashion designer Max Azria, and was produced primarily by John Shanks and Dr. Luke, with Cyrus herself holding a writing credit only on the live Jonas Brothers duet "Before the Storm." Despite its commercial origins, the EP was widely received as a meaningful transitional moment in Cyrus's career — Apple Music noted that "from the opening of 'Kicking and Screaming' you'll notice cranked guitars hoisting Cyrus' sassy singing," signalling a deliberate move away from her Disney/Hannah Montana identity toward a more assertive pop-rock sound.
Commercially, The Time of Our Lives was a significant success, debuting at number two on the
Billboard 200
and eventually being certified triple platinum by the RIAA with over 1.3 million copies sold in the US alone and roughly 3.2 million worldwide. Its lead single "Party in the U.S.A." — co-written by Dr. Luke, Claude Kelly, and Jessie J — became Cyrus's biggest hit to that point, peaking at number two on the Billboard Hot 100 and becoming Hollywood Records' best- and fastest-selling single ever released. The second single, the ballad "When I Look at You," was later used to promote Cyrus's 2010 film The Last Song. A Deluxe Edition with three additional tracks was subsequently released, and Cyrus herself described the project as "a transition album, like a stepping stone" in preparation for the more ambitious direction she would pursue on her next full-length record.
