Description
Nessa Barrett’s Tough Love is her third studio album, an 11-track collection released in September 2026 through Warner Records that brings her dark-pop songwriting into a more guitar-driven, gothic setting. Moody bass lines, trip-hop textures, creeping organ, and cinematic production frame her intimate vocals, drawing connections to Lana Del Rey’s noir-pop drama and the sultry guitar atmosphere of Arctic Monkeys’ AM. The title track pairs a stomping rhythm with agile guitar melodies, while “Dracula” heightens the theatrical atmosphere and “Too Fast to Live, Too Young to Die” introduces a dangerous, lovers-on-the-run sensibility. The result is a cohesive exploration of dark romance, with catchy pop structures beneath its brooding exterior.
Across the album, Barrett blends personal experience with imagined characters to examine desire, exploitation, fame, and the point where devotion becomes self-destruction. “Candy” offers a particularly vulnerable account of being used by a partner, while “Glamorous” contrasts outward allure with private pain; the closing “Bad Girls Never Die” turns toward defiance. These tensions give Tough Love its identity: seductive but uneasy, confident yet emotionally exposed, and constantly negotiating the distance between love as refuge and love as danger. Rather than resolving those contradictions, Barrett inhabits them, shaping an atmospheric record whose strongest moments connect its stylized imagery to recognizable hurt.
