Description

Natalia Lafourcade’s Un Canto por México, Vol. 1 is a 2020 album that channels Mexican musical history into a warm, carefully arranged contemporary folk record. Built around son jarocho, ranchera, bolero, huapango, and regional Mexican traditions, it combines traditional repertoire with reworked Lafourcade songs and new originals. The project was created as a fundraiser for the reconstruction of the Centro de Documentación del Son Jarocho in Jáltipan de Morelos, Veracruz, a cultural center damaged in the 2017 Puebla earthquake; as a result, the album treats preservation, community, and cultural memory as inseparable from its music.

Across its fourteen tracks, Lafourcade’s intimate voice is framed by acoustic instruments, ensemble arrangements, and collaborations that widen the album’s sense of musical community. “El Balajú / Serenata Huasteca” introduces its traditionalist spirit, while “Veracruz,” “Mi Tierra Veracruzana,” and “Cucurrucucú Paloma” honor classic Mexican songwriting. She also revisits “Hasta la Raíz” with Los Cojolites and Los Auténticos Decadentes, sings “Para Qué Sufrir” with Jorge Drexler, and joins Carlos Rivera for “Mexicana Hermosa”; original songs such as “Una Vida” and “Mi Religión” sit naturally alongside the standards. The album’s blend of refinement and roots consciousness earned it the 2020 Latin Grammy for Album of the Year and the 2021 Grammy Award for Best Regional Mexican Music Album, confirming it as one of Lafourcade’s most celebrated tributes to Mexico’s living musical traditions.
