Description

Natalia Lafourcade’s Un Canto por México, Vol. II is a 2021, 11-track album that deepens her celebration of Mexican and Latin American musical heritage. Blending son jarocho, bolero, ranchera, folk, and orchestral-pop arrangements, the album treats familiar songs with intimacy and reverence rather than simply reproducing them. It emerged from Lafourcade’s Un Canto por México benefit project, which raised funds to rebuild Veracruz’s Centro de Documentación del Son Jarocho after earthquake damage—linking the music to the preservation of Afro-Mexican folk traditions and cultural memory.

The album moves between traditional repertoire and reimagined Lafourcade compositions, using duets to connect generations and regions of Latin music. Its opening “La Llorona” is sparse and solemn, while “Cien Años” features Pepe Aguilar, “Luz de Luna” features ranchera icon Aida Cuevas, and “Soy lo Prohibido” pairs Lafourcade with Caetano Veloso. Other guests include Mon Laferte, Los Cojolites, Carlos Rivera, Silvana Estrada, Ely Guerra, Rubén Blades, Mare Advertencia Lirika, and Jorge Drexler. The result is a graceful, collaborative record concerned with love, longing, grief, and tradition; it received Latin Grammy recognition including Album of the Year and was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Regional Mexican Music Album.
