Description

With Every Breath I Take is Cécile McLorin Salvant’s first album with full orchestra, recorded with the Metropole Orkest under conductor Jules Buckley and released by Nonesuch Records in June 2026. The ten-track project brings together songs from Broadway, jazz standards, European film music, and one Salvant original, all arranged by Darcy James Argue to highlight her control of dynamics, timbre, and phrasing in a large-scale setting. The title song by Cy Coleman and David Zippel functions as the album’s emotional center, unfolding slowly over a detailed orchestral backdrop that emphasizes themes of longing and vulnerability.

Throughout the album, Salvant uses the orchestra to deepen her long-standing engagement with historical repertoire and narrative song. Pieces such as Stephen Sondheim’s Send in the Clowns, Billy Strayhorn’s Lush Life, Buddy Johnson’s Ever Since the One I Love’s Been Gone, Barbara Song from The Threepenny Opera, and Michel Legrand’s music from Les Parapluies de Cherbourg sit alongside her composition Left Over, forming a program that moves fluidly between jazz, cabaret, and art-song. Taken together, the album presents Salvant in an orchestral context that expands her usual palette while keeping the focus on careful storytelling and the emotional weight of the songs she has chosen.
