Women + Country

Jakob Dylan’s Women + Country is a warm, rootsy solo album that leans into folk, country, and Americana textures rather than the more polished rock sound associated with The Wallflowers. Produced by T Bone Burnett, the record has a dusty, intimate atmosphere, with acoustic guitars, brushed percussion, subtle organ, and restrained arrangements that leave plenty of room for Dylan’s weathered voice. The presence of backing vocals from Neko Case and Kelly Hogan adds richness and contrast, giving many songs a haunted, communal feeling.

Lyrically, the album is reflective and character-driven, filled with images of hard roads, worn relationships, spiritual longing, and uneasy American landscapes. Songs like “Nothing But the Whole Wide World,” “Everybody’s Hurting,” “Down on Our Own Shield,” and “Truth for a Truth” feel patient and understated, relying more on mood and storytelling than big hooks. Overall, Women + Country presents Dylan as a thoughtful Americana songwriter, crafting a quiet, atmospheric record about endurance, loneliness, and searching for grace.
